Statement of Faith
The following statements express the doctrinal Christian convictions of Rivendell Sanctuary’s senior management:
We believe in One God, the Triune God, who exists simultaneously as three distinct persons—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—all of whom share equally and completely one divine nature. This Triune God is eternal, infinite and perfect and is the transcendent and sovereign Creator of the universe who remains intimately involved with His creation.
We believe in Jesus Christ as both fully divine and fully human. He exists eternally and became man by means of virgin birth. We believe in His sinless life, His attesting miracles and His mission to redeem all people and creation. We believe in His sacrificial death on the cross, His bodily resurrection from the dead, His ascension into heaven and His place at the right hand of the Father where He serves as High Priest and Advocate. We believe in His imminent return to judge all mankind and complete His redemption for all creation.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, as divine and co-equal with the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit seeks to glorify Christ, provide comfort and counsel to the redeemed, and convict mankind of sin and righteousness. We believe the Holy Spirit resides in the people of God in order to empower them for sanctification and service.
We believe the Bible is the authoritative and inspired Word of God without historical, moral or spiritual error. It is the blueprint for reality and should be recognized as the final authority in every aspect of life.
We believe man is created in the image of God and is, therefore, the crown of God’s creation and chief steward of creation (a.k.a. the earth). Through their free choice, the first humans disobeyed God and, as a result, caused all creation to fall. From this, man incurred both physical and spiritual death. From the time of the Fall to the present, man has passed on this sinful nature and, therefore, has been separated from God. Reconciliation and reunion with God cannot come through man’s own merit. It can only be found through faith in Jesus Christ, by His sacrifice on the cross and in His resurrection.
We believe that the physical universe is the creation of God. It reveals His existence, glory, wisdom, character and power. We believe that God’s work in creation and God’s Word in the Bible will never contradict one another.
We believe that the church is the spiritual body of the Lord Jesus Christ who serves as its head. The function of the church is to love God with heart, soul, mind and body, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. The church exists to join with God in His great redemptive plan to restore, not only individual souls, but also all of creation.
While we respect the traditions, doctrines and history of the church, we are neither a seminary, nor affiliated with any denomination. Rather, we see the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a reflection of a relational God in whom unity and diversity co-exist without contradiction. We seek to encourage the kind of healthy exploration that embraces biblical truth and releases the individual to enjoy a life of increasing discovery and dependency on God, as Savior, Father, Counselor and Friend.
